Gadwal is located in Mahabubnagar
district of Telangana, India. Gadwal is known for its handloom jari sarees. The
local weavers can weave the 5.5 meters of saree fabric in such a way that it
can be folded down to the size of small matchbox. Gadwall sarees have been worn
since the 1930s. There are cotton sarees with an attached silk border and silk
pallu.

Gadwal sarees are handwoven
varieties of saree, the main source of livelihood for the weavers of Gadwal, Telangana. The saree is known for its different motifs used such as Youli,
stylish Lion, double headed eagle, floral designs etc. Border patterns could be
Hamsa, mythical swan, combined with carvings tendrils and other delightful
themes.

Gadwal silk sarees are woven in
kotha kota silk with contrasting border and pallu. Gadwal saree is a mix of
cotton and silk, where the entire drape is completely cotton-weaved, while the
borders are silk. The weaving technique used to design the Gadwal sarees is the
interwoven weft technique which was traditionally known as kuppam and weaving
style for the borders known as kumbam. These sarees are woven in pure silk as
well and were made available in contrasting colors like lime green or a canary
yellow. Most sarees in the present time are cotton and silk hybrid.
Gadwal saree is famous for its
wide range of designs and borders. The zari work in gold and silver along the
borders is the highlight of this saree. With the passage of time, Gadwal sarees
have gained a certain level of modern techniques and colors in its vast array
of exquisite saree collection.

It is said that the current style
of weaving Gadwal sarees was learnt by some weavers from Gadwal when they were
sent to by the king to learn the art of weaving this particular style. The
outcome was the present handwoven variety of Gadwal sarees that immediately
became popular and sustained till date. In the 1930s, the commercialization of
Gadwal sarees took place with the spinning looms and other small manual
machines coming into existence to help the weavers.
