Sambalpuri sarees are famous for their incorporation of traditional motifs like shanka, chakra, phula, all of which have deep symbolism, but the high point of these sarees is the traditional craftsmanship of the “Bandhakala” the tie dye art reflected in their intricate weaves, also known as Sambalpuri “ikkat”.

Ikkat
is a dyeing technique involving the application of dye resistant bindings in a
predetermined pattern prior to to the coloring of threads. The ikkat allows the
weaver to prepare precisely the pattern of colors on the finished fabric by
wrapping sections of the yarn with rubber strips before dipping it in select
dyes. The rubber strips used for tying are a modern innovation replacing the
old one traditional method of tying with coarse cottonthread.
Ikkat
is classified into single and double ikkat styles. Single ikat fabric are
created by interweaving tied and dyed warp with plain weft or resisted weft
yarn is inserted in plain weft. Double ikat involves the process of resisting
on both warp and weft and then interlacing them to form intricate yet well
compose patterns.

Briefly, in this technique, the threads are
first tie-dyed and later woven into a fabric, with theentire process taking
many weeks. These sarees first
became popular outside the state when the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi started
wearing them. To provide protection to
the weavers practicing this art, the handloom silk sarees manufactured in
Sambalpur and Berhampur in Odisha were included in the Governmet of India’s
Geographical Indications(GI)registry. Some varieties of Sambalpuri sarees are Sonepuri,
Pasapalli, Bomkai, Barapalli and Bapta and which are in high demand.

commonly adorning the fabric are bitter gourd, the atasi flower, the kanti-phul or small flower, peacocks and birds, Konark temple, conches. In one saree the initial or large motif known as Buttah, such a bird
sitting on a tree, is woven on the body. This accentuates the fabric look. The
