Banarasi sarees are made in Varanasi, a city which is also called as Benaras. Varanasi or Banaras is a well known place of handloom weaving. It is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Raw materials used in weaving are pure silk, cotton, gold silver thread or zari. These are very famous in India and are known for their gold and silver brocade or zari, fine silk and opulent embroidery.

The special features of this
saree are Mughal inspired designs such as intricate intertwining floral and
foliate motifs, kalga and bel, a string of upright leaves called jhallar at the
outer edge of border is a characteristic of these sarees. Other features are
gold work, compact weaving, figures with small details, metallic visual
effects, pallus, jal(a net like pattern), meena work etc.

Banarasi sarees mainly come in
pure silk, organza with zari and silk, georgette, katan, crepe silk, supernet,
patola cotton and shattir. Kimkhab, potthan, betta and amru are some of the
famous types of brocades woven on banarasi sarees.

passed and this tradition of the weaving has neither dimmed nor lost luster.
Over the years, the banarasi silk handloom industry has been incurring huge losses
because of competition from mechanised
units producing the Banarasi silk sarees at a faster rate and at cheaper cost,
another source of competition of has been
sarees made of cheaper synthetic alternatives to silk. In 2009, after
two years wait weaver associations in Uttar Pradesh, secured Geographical
Indication rights for the Banaras brocades and sarees.
